Abortion

Abortion is the deliberate and direct killing of a human being in the initial phase of its existence between conception and birth.

Abortion is the direct killing of an unborn child from the moment of conception and is considered a grave offense against the moral law (CCC 2270-2271). The Church has affirmed since the first century that every human life, from the moment of conception until death, is sacred (CCC 2270).

The Right to Life

Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. A human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person (CCC 2270). Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense (CCC 2272).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the penalty for procuring an abortion? The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime, intended to make the person aware of the gravity of the act (CCC 2272).

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
