Antioch

The ancient city where the followers of Jesus were first called 'Christians.'

Antioch was a major center of early Christianity and the starting point for St. Paul's missionary journeys (Acts 11:26). It was in this city that the term 'Christian' was first used to describe those who followed the Way of Christ (CCC 816, 818).

The Universal Mission

Antioch represented the expansion of the Gospel beyond Jerusalem to the Greek-speaking world, showing the universal (catholic) nature of the Church's mission from its earliest days (CCC 830-831).
